Alleged Palm Is rioters consider legal action against police

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 19 January 2005

Those arrested over last year's riot on Palm Island in north Queensland may take legal action against the Queensland police service.

Nineteen people were charged over the unrest in November, which was triggered by the death in custody of Cameron Doomadgee.

Kevin Rose from the Aboriginal Legal Aid Service says at least 10 people are considering making civil complaints on the grounds that the arresting police used undue force.

"We're talking about things like the question of the lawfulness of entry to certain dwellings, the force used in arresting persons and there's been comments made by people that force had been used against elderly people and even perhaps children when people were being arrested in relation to the riots," he said.
