Who are the indigenous people of your country?

What do you know about them?

Chris from Canada The indigenous people of Canada are the: Inuit First Nations and M They were first friends with but soon were taken advantage of by the French settlers in early Canada. Over the years their culture has suffered; restricted by laws and institutions forced upon them. Many indigenous people in Canada today suffer greatly; with a loss of education they are losing connection to their roots. There is on the other hand a resilience that has made it through. All over southern Ontario where I live there are frequently native festivals and events open to all. There are native cultural centres all around the city of Toronto highlighting the network of support working to mend the past.

Seminole Cherokee Iroquois the Abenaki Choctaw Sioux Blackfoot Chickasaw are but a few of the tribes indigenous to North America. I have studied topically on many tribes and only researched a few. The Iroquois had an amazing government established which wars between the different tribes to come to a relative halt. I first heard of them when I was web browsing about the Sydney 2000 Olympics... I was still too young to use computer by the time the Sydney Olympics were still being held and the computer wasn't still a part of living in our city. And so now I'm old enough I had interest searching about it.... then I came across the name "Cathy Freeman". Sounds interesting..... I searched her name on YouTube and.... Wow! She was fast! Searched her Bio and saw that she is an Australian Aboriginal sprinter. I had to search about the race of course and read about it and here's what I learned about them (also found info from your website so gotta put that here too): They already had the presence in Australia to at least 40 000 years. They believe that their origins and The Creation was made in the Dreamtime. Aboriginal men hunt for food using spears and boomerangs. Their spiritual songs are often telling about their ancestors in the Dreamtime and is accompanied by the Australian Aborigines famous instrument the DIDGERIDOO. And more to tell.

Anonymous from USA Assorted "American Indians " Cherokee Iroquois Apache Inuit (extreme north) Adriana (gulf coast) etc. Most indigenous American peoples were highly spiritual but not essentially polytheistic offering reverence but not necessarily worship to the spirits that were believed to inhabit nearly every thing. Most nations referred to themselves as "the People" in their own language and the estimated continental population prior to European "discovery" of the Americas was the the 6-15 million person range dropping suddenly down to merely hundreds of thousands by the American Revolutionary war. Though they are often described as being bloodthirsty or warlike even the most "Savage" nations and tribes were in fact rather welcoming rarely displaying the same xenophobia of their European neighbours and regularly welcoming and adopting in whites that chose the native life and beliefs instead. Tribal life tended to revolve around the community centre fire pit or lodge where stories of how the People came to be lessons from nature et al were conveyed through storytelling song and dance. Contrary to popular belief the indigenous peoples of the Americas had to learn the hard way about conservation after causing noticeable features like the Great Plains were created from nationwide forests through slash-and-burn farming and single-handedly causing the extinction of various mammoth species through overhunting. Nonetheless reverence and harmony with the world around them was something usually strove for and intertribal warfare usually resulted in far less death than any other warring culture preferring to prove bravery often by "counting coup " getting close and touching but not injuring one's opponent.

Sonya from Canada There are many tribes such as Algonquin Ojibway Dogrib all parts of First Nations Inuit and Metis. They are at risk currently due to many things such as violence drugs and alcohol losing their traditional ways and F.A.S. as well as lack of resources such as sewage management access to food and clean water all part of their isolation. They are amazing groups of people with much to offer.
Anonymous The First Nations people or Native Americans as they are sometimes called are the indigenous people of Canada. I know a lot...how much do you want me to write? There are many different tribes of First Nations people across Canada such as Haida Coast Salish Iroquois to name a few...there are many many more. They faced many problems when European settlers arrived in Canada there was much abuse and many were killed. Children were forced into residential schools and forced to adopt christianity as their religion. Many years later several treaties were formed as a form of reparation but a lot of damage was done that can not be reversed or repaired. A lot of their land was taken away and their spirituality was closely tied to the land this caused big problems. Now many first nations communities are still dealing with issues bad reputations drug and alcohol abuse diabetes etc. There are many first nations people that are living beautifully as well though.
