Yalanji people granted freehold title over north Qld land

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on January 24th, 2002.

In an emotional ceremony, an indigenous group has been handed freehold title over land in far north Queensland.

It is the conclusion of Australia's first negotiated native title settlement over a pastoral lease.

The Yalanji people have been handed 270 hectares near Mt Carbine, 155 kilometres north-west of Cairns.

Traditional owner Danny O'Shane says the negotiated agreement was achieved through mutual respect and goodwill between the pastoralists and his people.
