Injunction delays funeral of respected Aboriginal artist
The funeral of Aboriginal artist Clifford "Possum" Tjapaltjarri will not go ahead today because of a Territory Supreme Court injunction preventing his family burying him at Mt Allan.

His former de-facto wife Milanka Sullivan said Mr Tjapaltjarri's will states he wanted to be buried on Napperby Downs station, 100 kilometres south-east of Mt Allan.

His Aboriginal wife and son are both buried at Napperby Downs but his family wants him to be buried at Mt Allan.

The Court heard yesterday that the Mt Napperby community council has told the executor of the will, the Public Trustee, it was inappropriate for the artist to be buried there.

But, Justice John Gallop has granted an interim injunction preventing Mr Tjapaltjarri being buried anywhere except Mt Napperby.

A spokesman from Mt Allan says some people had already gathered at the community for the funeral.
