CLP voices support for new uranium mine

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 17 February 2005

The Northern Territory Opposition has given in-principle support to uranium mining at a proposed new site in Kakadu National Park.

A French mining company wants to mine a deposit near Nourlangie Rock, south of the existing Ranger mine.

A five-year mining moratorium imposed by traditional owners runs out in April.

The Territory Government says uranium mining is an issue for the federal Mining Minister.

But Country Liberal Party leader Denis Burke says he has no such qualms.

"Why should South Australia export uranium to the world, using our railway, and we can't," he said.

"So in that context, with appropriate environmental and regulatory controls, with the agreement of Aboriginal owners, we're all for uranium mining."
