Vanstone moves to protect ATSIC assets

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 28 January 2005

Federal Indigenous Affairs Minister Senator Amanda Vanstone says she has moved to stop any improper sale of assets held by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).

Media reports have suggested the board is considering selling assets, including art works, to fund a legal battle preventing ATSIC's abolition.

Senator Vanstone says she has now issued a general direction requiring the board to give 30 days notice of any intention to dispose of assets.

She says the move would give the Government time to oppose any improper sell-off.
