Qld police considering action against Aboriginal activist

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 1 December 2004

Queensland's Police Commissioner says no decision has been made on whether to take legal action against an Aboriginal activist who has warned of possible payback against police.

Aboriginal activist Murrandoo Yanner said police may be targeted if the charges against the men arrested over last week's riot on Palm Island in north Queensland are not dropped.

The riot followed a death in custody.

Commissioner Bob Atkinson says investigations are continuing.

"Obviously if the comments attributed to Murrandoo Yanner are correct, then I think that's very regrettable and unfortunate," he said.

"I would hope that no-one would support those comments and people would distance themselves from them.

"I've indicated that firstly we want to establish the accuracy of the comments attributed to him and we'll take advice if they are accurate."
