Uluru to close for mourning

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 24 November 2004

The rock climb at Uluru will be closed this Sunday as traditional owners mourn the death of a senior Anangu law man.

The climb at Uluru is usually only closed for the safety of climbers during hot, windy or wet weather conditions.

On Sunday it will be shut for only the third time in 19 years for sacred ceremonies by local Anangu to mourn the loss of the former Maruku arts chairman who can not be named for cultural reasons.

Traditional owner and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park board member Rene Kulitja has asked for understanding from visitors who may have wanted to climb the rock.

All other parts of the park will be open.
