Qld allows communities to ban home brew

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 21 October 2004

The Queensland Parliament has unanimously passed laws allowing bans on home brew kits in Indigenous communities.

The legislation will prohibit the kits if a community decides a ban is necessary.

Indigenous Policy Minister Liddy Clark has told the House that some Indigenous people who want their Alcohol Management Plans to work asked the Government to deal with the problem of home brew.

"This Bill simply delivers a way a number of remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities can deal with an issue which is holding them back," she said.

"The State Government was made aware that in a small number of communities the production of home brew was posing a threat to the effectiveness of the plans."
