Ministers address Indigenous foetal alcohol syndrome

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 21 August 2004

State and territory ministers for the status of women are considering methods of improving awareness of foetal alcohol syndrome among Indigenous communities.

A conference in Adelaide has been told that more needs to be done to educate Indigenous people about the perils of drinking and taking drugs while pregnant.

South Australia's Minister for the Status of Women, Steph Key, says the ministers at the conference agreed on the importance of the matter.

"We were saying that we understood that Aboriginal women had raised this issue with us and we would certainly be making sure that there's the support there to educate Aboriginal and Indigenous women," she said.

"I think we need to educate everybody about the implications of drinking and taking drugs and sniffing and chroming when pregnant."
