Minister rejects homelessness, grog ban link

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 18 August 2004

Queensland's Indigenous Policy Minister Liddy Clark says there is no substance to rumours that people with alcohol addictions are moving to other towns to escape grog bans.

Alcohol management plans have been introduced in 17 Indigenous communities.

Ms Clark has told Parliament that her department carried out surveys on homelessness in Cairns and Townsville, but found no significant increases due to alcohol restrictions in other towns.

"A survey to gauge any changes in the homeless profile in Mt Isa is planned, in conjunction with police, for next month," she said.

"However, anecdotal evidence also shows that there is no casual link between population displacement and alcohol restrictions."
