Aboriginal Children's Day focuses on family violence

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 4 August 2004

"Our childhood, our chance" is the theme of today's national Aboriginal Children's Day.

This year's event will be marked by the launch of an Aboriginal family violence prevention kit.

The kits contain vital information on domestic violence and sexual assault and activities for parents to work through with their children.

Annette Peardon from the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre says the kit will show parents how to create a safe environment for their children.

"To make parents aware when you're shouting at a child, it affects a child," she said.

"I think most people forget that little people have ears, little people have eyes and they need to acknowledge that.

"They need to reassure their children that they are in a safe environment."
