Aboriginal painting fails to sell

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 26 July 2004

An Aboriginal painting expected to reach $1 million at a Melbourne auction has failed to sell.

The painting, "Uluru", by Kimberley-based artist Rover Thomas, was passed in for $675,000.

Sotheby's director of Aboriginal art Tim Klingender, said galleries lacked money for Aboriginal art at present.

"I guess what's disappointing and perhaps why it didn't sell is that none of the institutions in Australia, none of the state or regional galleries, or national galleries for the matter, have any budget to buy Indigenous art at the moment," he said.

The auction continues tomorrow night.
