Constable quizzed at Hickey inquiry

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 7 July 2004

A Sydney police officer has come under heavy questioning about her movements and conversations on the day an Aboriginal teenager died in inner Sydney.

The death of 17-year-old Thomas 'TJ' Hickey led to the Redfern riot.

Constable Marie Reynolds was one of four police officers who saw TJ riding his bike through Redfern in February this year shortly before he crashed and suffered fatal injuries.

She was travelling in a police paddy wagon, known as Redfern 16, which drove behind TJ on a footpath shortly before his accident.

Constable Reynolds told the coronial inquest that she only saw TJ briefly as he was riding on the road leading to the footpath, and did not see him once the paddy wagon had driven on to the pathway.

Constable Reynolds came under sustained questioning about the movements of Redfern 16, repeatedly telling the inquest she could not recall much of the detail of the day's incidents.
