Redfern inquest told police discussed teenager's death

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 7 July 2004

A coronial inquest into the death of TJ Hickey in Sydney's Redfern has been told four police officers discussed the 17-year-old's accident before preparing their statements about the incident.

Thomas 'TJ' Hickey suffered fatal injuries when he crashed his bike and became impaled on a fence at Redfern in inner Sydney.

Claims police were chasing the teenager at the time helped to fuel the Redfern riot and the coronial inquest has heard he was seen by two pairs of police officers shortly before he crashed.

One of those officers, Constable Ruth Rocker, has told how TJ Hickey was convulsing badly when they found him impaled on the fence.

She has also told the inquiry all four officers who had seen TJ Hickey shortly before the accident discussed where and when they had seen him before making their statements on the day.

Constable Rocker said they also discussed a rumour of police involvement in his death and decided to include a denial in their statements.
