Redfern 'block' sealed off after police chase

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 9 June 2004

Senior police say dozens of officers sealed off the Block in Redfern today because of fears a robbery in a nearby suburb may have led to another outbreak of violence at the Aboriginal community.

Three men are being questioned about a hotel robbery in Broadway this morning after a lengthy police chase through surrounding suburbs, which ended at Redfern where the trio allegedly dumped a car.

Redfern police Commander Superintendent Dennis Smith says up to 90 officers from several commands were involved because of concerns the situation might escalate.

"The nature of the where the vehicle ended up and the issues that have occurred recently there with violence against police... we just took precautions that we thought needed to be taken to arrest the offenders," he said.
