Redfern inquiry hears child abuse ignored

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 7 June 2004

The Director General of the Department of Community Services (DOCS) has told the Parliamentary inquiry on Redfern that a new plan is being devised for dealing with serious child abuse reports currently not being attended to.

His evidence coincides with the Public School Principals' Forum saying a survey of principals reveals many have major concerns about DOCS' inaction.

One in ten who responded to the questionnaire felt they were sending children to homes where they are being abused.

DOCS chief Neil Shepherd has told the Redfern inquiry that a lack of resources has meant abuse notifications, rated at a lower level than urgent, are not being dealt with even when there are multiple notifications.

"There are many very ugly cases of a child protection nature in New South Wales and what you are looking at is pretty typical of what is out there," he said.

Minister for Community Services Carmel Tebbutt says she has asked for more evidence about the School Principals' claims.
