Constitution to recognise Victoria's Aborigines

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 29 May 2004

The Victorian Government will amend the state's constitution to recognise the contribution's of Victoria's Aboriginal people.

Premier Steve Bracks told the ALP state conference in Melbourne this morning that the Government acknowledges Victoria was established without proper consultation, recognition or involvement of Aboriginal people.

"I'm very proud to announce that during the next sitting of Parliament, I will introduce a bill to amend our constitution in Victoria," he said.

"For the very first time it will recognise Victoria's Aboriginal people and their contribution to the state of Victoria."

The conference will also hear from a union alliance, which wants the Government to scrap its proposed emergency powers bill.

The alliance is also seeking greater consultation in policy development.
