Aboriginal leaders turn out for sculpture dedication

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 28 May 2004

Leaders of the Aboriginal community will attend the dedication by Indigenous Affairs Minister Amanda Vanstone of a new sculpture this morning at Reconciliation Place.

The memorial to the stolen generations will feature three new slivers and follows widespread consultation within the communities affected by the stolen generations.

While the Aboriginal community is happy with the new memorial, Audrey Kinnear, co-chair of the National Sorry Day Committee says the downstream effects of the policy to remove Aboriginal children remain today.

"These policies were initiated by Government," she said.

"The harm that's been done to many of us and to our families and the disruption to our lives and the contemporary issues today [that] we're dealing with ... are all a follow-on from children being separated from their families."
