Redfern riot inquiry to begin

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 18 May 2004

A parliamentary inquiry will begin today into policing the inner-Sydney suburb of Redfern.

In February, 17-year-old Thomas Hickey died after coming off his bicycle and being impaled on a fence, sparking a riot in the area.

His family blamed police for his death, saying officers had been chasing him at the time.

Police have denied the allegation and 40 police were hurt in the riot.

The Upper House inquiry will examine policing strategies and resources as well as the provision of services and programs in the Redfern community.

It will also examine proposals for the future of an area known as The Block.

More than 60 submissions have been received and an interim report is expected by the end of July.
