Hundreds rally against ATSIC abolishment

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 10 May 2004

About 600 people have rallied in Adelaide this afternoon to protest over the Federal Government's plan to abolish the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC).

The crowd walked to the office of Federal Aboriginal Affairs Minister Amanda Vanstone to hand over signed petitions calling for ATSIC to be saved.

South Australia's ATSIC Zone Commissioner Klynton Wanganeen says Indigenous and non-Indigenous people from as far away as Port Augusta and Ceduna joined the march.

"We want to show Howard and also all levels of government, whether it be state and federal, whether it's Labor, Liberal... that the whole of the Australian community do not support John Howard's proposals," he said.
