No charges in 'winegate' affair

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 22 April 2004

The Queensland Opposition is outraged that the Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) has cleared the Government in the 'winegate' affair.

A media adviser to Indigenous Policy Minister Liddy Clark took a bottle of wine on board the government jet last month when it landed at the alcohol-restricted community of Lockhart River.

Police Commissioner Bob Atkinson says the adviser and the pilots could have been charged but the tarmac was not a public place.

The CMC says there was no official misconduct on the issue of who lied or covered-up the affair.

Premier Peter Beattie is delighted, saying: "This is an honest Government and this has been established by this report," he said.

Opposition leader Lawrence Springborg is aghast.

"The CMC in Queensland has become a multi-million dollar joke," he said.

"They couldn't track an elephant through snow and even if they could, they wouldn't know what to do with it if they did."

Mr Springborg believes a cloud remains over the Government.
