Aboriginal women to defy police by dancing topless

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 27 February 2004

ATSIC's central zone commissioner says she and other Aboriginal women will demonstrate their right to preserve traditional law today by dancing topless at the opening of a cultural centre in Alice Springs.

Commissioner Alison Anderson says police last week told a group of Aboriginal women to stop performing a cultural dance bare-breasted in a local park.

Ms Anderson says the Papunya elders were preparing a group of girls for a conference in Sydney.

She says she is outraged at the police actions and will contact the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission and the Ombudsman.

The acting commander of the southern police region in the NT says he supports the police actions.
