Indigenous leaders welcome Torres Strait land use agreement

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 25 February 2004

Torres Strait Indigenous leaders have welcomed a land use agreement with the Federal Government to establish a new defence radar system in the region.

The Defence and Customs Ministers have met with traditional owners on Dauan and Badu Islands this morning.

Most members on the tiny community on Dauan turned out for the signing of the land use agreement.

Dauan will be one of two sites in the Torres Strait for a new surface wave radar that will be used to monitor illegal activity in northern waters.

Chair of the Torres Strait Regional Authority Terry Waia says Dauan is a natural choice for a customs and defence radar.

Construction on the radar will start this week.
