Redfern teen's death prompts Canberra protest

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 20 February 2004

A stand-off has developed between police and Aboriginal protesters outside the Australian Federal Police (AFP) headquarters in Canberra.

The protest is focusing on the death of Thomas Hickey.

A group of almost 20 protesters has gathered outside the AFP headquarters with Aboriginal flags and banners.

A wall of police stands between them and the building.

At present, the biggest concern is the ceremonial fire that the protesters have lit.

With a total fire ban declared for today, police and the fire brigade are discussing their next move.

The protesters say their actions are in memory of the 17-year-old who died in Redfern last weekend after allegedly being chased by police.
