Policeman recovers from Redfern knock-out

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 17 February 2004

A New South Wales policeman is recovering after being knocked out when he was hit in the head with a brick during Sydney's Redfern riot.

Leading Senior Constable Michael McGowan has thanked the other police, fire and ambulance officers who helped him.

The 35-year-old says he has little memory of the incident but has since watched what happened to him on television.

"I was sickened," he said. "Watching vision of yourself get hit in the head and fall to the ground and not having any recollection of it is very scary and it made me a little bit emotional.

"We had the equipment to protect ourselves but there is an uncontrolled element to it which causes you to wonder what could go wrong."
