Indigenous people reap jobs from new rail link

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 18 January 2004

The Northern Land Council says the first train from Adelaide to Darwin marks a new era for the Northern Territory's Aboriginal people.

Council spokesman Norman Fry says more than 150 Aboriginal workers helped build the line and many more took part in training programs.

Mr Fry says Indigenous workers formed about 30 per cent of the project's workforce in the north of the Territory.

He says the skills and training will stand these workers in good stead when other major projects come on line.
