Indigenous job programs failing

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 20 December 2003

Aboriginal work-for-the-dole programs are set to be overhauled with revelations that the programs have debts of at least $2 million.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services (ATSIS) believes some of the debts have been caused by financial misappropriation or mismanagement.

Nineteen of the 270 taxpayer-funded Community Development Employment Programs (CDEP) have had administrators appointed, nationwide.

ATSIS says the system is flawed and needs a dramatic overhaul.

ATSIS chief executive Wayne Gibbons has told The Australian newspaper part of the reform will involve moving away from grants and onto contracts.
