Ancient rock art found in Tasmania

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 4 December 2003

Aboriginal rock paintings believed to be thousands of years old have been discovered in Tasmania's south-west.

Around 35 paintings have been found in the World Heritage Area but the exact location is being kept secret.

Aboriginal Land Council spokesman Brian Mansell says the paintings could be 11,000 years old.

"We have to assume that the cave was used by men and young males for ceremonial purposes, because of the ochre and the hand prints, it's usually a ceremonial symbol," he said.
