Advisory committee asked to consider change to fishing act

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 14 November 2003

Concern has been raised at the number of Aboriginal people being charged with offences under the New South Wales Fisheries Act.

A meeting of the Estuary Management Advisory Committee in Sydney today will be asked to consider a change to legislation to take account of Aboriginal culture under the Act.

Far-south coast fisherman Ron Snape says too many Kooris are facing court for offences they consider part of cultural pursuits.

"At Batemans Bay court alone in one session there were 19 young Indigenous people before that court," he said.

"Now these people are not wilful law breakers, it's just that the Fisheries Act does not encapsulate Indigenous activities."
