Survey shows Indigenous people earn less, rent more

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 30 October 2003

A new snapshot of Indigenous Australians shows they earn less and are less likely to be employed or to have completed year 12 than other Australians.

The latest Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander census figures show Indigenous households earn about $200 less per week.

Indigenous people are also half as likely to have completed their schooling and only about 40 per cent are employed, compared to 60 per cent in the wider population.

Indigenous householders are more inclined to rent and to have a larger number of residents in each home.
