Indigenous tobacco dependency must be treated: AMA

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 28 October 2003

The Australian Medical Association says Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health agencies should be required to treat tobacoo dependency.

AMA Council of General Practice chair David Rivett says it should be a condition of funding for not only Aboriginal health services, but community health centres and family planning clinics.

The request has been included in the AMA's funding submission to the Federal Government for next financial year.

Dr Rivett says smoking is the cause of disease among many Aboriginal people and the situation needs to be addressed.

"They have got a very high incidence of vascular disease due to other risk factors such as diabetes in conjunction with tobacco," he said.

"It really becomes a very serious threat and shortens their life expectancy markedly."
