Indigenous ref makes international debut

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 15 October 2003

Queenslander Adam Neale will today become the first Indigenous person to referee an international rugby league match.

The 26-year-old is in Darwin to adjudicate the game between the Australian Junior Kangaroos and Papua New Guinea.

Neale, who has been refereeing for 10 years, says he is overwhelmed by the appointment and hopes it will lead to a place in the NRL.

"I'm struggling with the enormity of it at the moment," he said.

"It's an international game, there hasn't been a lot of talk about it, but I think once we get going, it's going to be a lot of fun."
