Report backs Tent Embassy camping ban

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 29 July 2003

An ATSIC-commissioned report into the Aboriginal Tent Embassy in Canberra has recommended camping be banned on the site.

Embassy residents are vowing to fight any changes.

The report, by a Brisbane agency, consulted widely throughout the Indigenous community.

Just over half agreed with some form of camping on the site in front of Old Parliament House.

But the report found it was such a divisive issue it should be stopped, with or without widespread support.

ATSIC regional council acting chairman Keith Morgan today convened a meeting with embassy residents and local Indigenous groups to discuss the issues.

"The Queanbeyan regional council does support the recommendations from the Mirii consultancy group," he said.

But Isabelle Coe from the embassy says they will not be moved.

"We knew that we were sold out by ATSIC when the consultancy was done, we never agreed to it in the first place because we aren't part of the Government," she said.

"We're here in protest against this Government."

ATSIC says there will be more consultation before a final decision is taken by the Federal Government.
