Indigenous artworks fetch record prices

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 29 July 2003

Aboriginal artworks have sold for record prices at a Sotheby's auction in Sydney.

Sotheby's director of Aboriginal art Tim Klingender says a canvas by Johnny Warangkula Tjurpurrula from Papunya sold for more than $300,000.

Mr Klingender says other Northern Territory artists fared even better.

"Pretty much for the Territory artists we saw some amazing record prices," he said.

"We saw an Emily Nowahray painting sell for more than $500,000. It was estimated at $150,000 to $250,000 and sold for more than $500,000, $509,000 plus."
