C'wealth to address low Indigenous immunisation

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 28 June 2003

The Federal Government will fund an education initiative in central Australia to address the low immunisation rates among Aboriginal people.

The Central Australian Division of Primary Health care will receive about $120,000 to run the educational campaign in indigenous communities.

Country Liberal Party Senator for the Northern Territory Nigel Scullion says the program will be culturally appropriate.

"It's actually going to be translated into language to ensure we get a whole range of programs out there," he said.

"Right at the moment people are having diseases that they don't need to have, and to bring up their rights as Australians to have these diseases prevented particularly in young Indigenous children, it's very important that we roll out this education program and ensure they understand the benefits of immunisation."
