Violence 'out of control': health group

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 12 June 2003

A prominent Aboriginal health organisation has backed calls for brutality against women and children in indigenous communities to be treated as a national emergency.

The organisation says violence and child abuse are out of control in many WA communities.

The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation was responding to comments by indigenous leader, Mick Dodson, who says family violence in communities is getting worse.

Professor Dodson called on the Federal Government to combat the violence as a national priority.

The health organisation's WA based chairman Henry Councillor agrees.

"I think it needs to have a national action group to actually look at some of these particular issues... and I agree with him that there has been a number of Aboriginal leaders around the country that are not taking up this fight," Mr Councillor said.

Member for the Kimberley, Carol Martin, says the WA Government's done more than any other to combat the problem with the Gordon Inquiry, and the Commonwealth needs to do more.
