Aboriginal community doctors underpaid, NACHO says

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 8 June 2003

The National Aboriginal Controlled Health Organisation (NACHO) says doctors working in Aboriginal communities are being paid up to $40,000 less than they should be.

The organisation's Henry Councillor says he will be working closely with the Australian Medical Association's (AMA) new Federal Executive to ensure Aboriginal health services are improved.

He says more incentives are needed to attract doctors to work in remote communities.

"One of the things that we are hoping to establish with the AMA in terms of our new relationship is to look at a stronger role of support for NACHOS and some of its endeavours but also to maintain and look at other areas like doctors, particularly looking in Aboriginal medical services in terms of their remuneration package," he said.
