Indigenous crisis not addressed, health group says

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 17 May 2003

A prominent Aboriginal health organisation says this week's Federal Budget does almost nothing to address the crisis in Indigenous health.

The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation has welcomed a $20 million commitment for a healthcare access program, but says it is not new money.

Chair Henry Councillor says community controlled health services across Australia remain chronically under-funded.

"We've been providing it on a shoestring budget for some time now, there's been very little increase," Mr Councillor said.

"I acknowledge there has been a number of increases but basically they are dedicated towards programs and are disease driven.

"Unfortunately it's not looking at holistic health."
