Govt stays out of 'Nigger' Brown controversy

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 5 May 2003

The Federal Government has washed its hands of the controversy surrounding the ES "Nigger" Brown stand at a Toowoomba sports ground on Queensland's Darling Downs.

The United Nations ruled the word "nigger" is racially offensive but the Sportsground Trust decided to keep it anyway.

"Nigger" is the well-known nickname of former football champion ES Brown, who the grandstand honours.

The federal Member for Groom, Ian Macfarlane, says the Commonwealth will not interfere as the Australian courts have already made a decision.

"It's not an issue which affects the Federal Government," he said.

"The highest court in the land has rejected the issue and on that basis the Federal Government is not involved."
