Traditional owners not sure they want back Maralinga

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 27 March 2003

Traditional owners of the Maralinga lands, in South Australia's far west, say it is still not definite that they will accept the handover of the land from the Federal Government.

The Commonwealth has released a report saying the clean-up of the 1950s nuclear test site has been a success.

But that has been questioned be some experts, who say the process was seriously flawed.

Maralinga Tjartja administrator, Archie Barton, says the handover issue will be decided by the whole community, probably in the next few weeks.

"I'm not saying that we will accept it at this stage," said Mr Barton.

"They might accept it."

"We have to wait for a direction from the community."

"We don't just go to a six-man committee and things like that, we go to the whole community."
