Couple charged with selling home-made ginger wine to Aborigines

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 21 March 2003

Police in the Kimberley region of north-western WA have charged a Kununurra couple after they were allegedly caught selling home-made ginger wine to Aborigines for more than $10 a litre.

The pair, aged in their 40s, appeared in court earlier this week following a search of their home where police allege they seized two home-brew kits.

Senior Sergeant Mick Sutherland says the search was carried out after police noticed Aboriginal people drinking wine from soft drink bottles.

He says the alleged racket is galling, given attempts by police and local business owners to curb alcohol abuse in Aboriginal communities.

"We've got a liquor accord in place in Kununurra which has the agreement of the hotels and liquor outlets that they don't open until 12 midday and we were finding that people were walking around drunk [in] the morning and enquiries revealed that they were buying cool drink bottles full of alcohol - homemade alcohol," he said.
