Qld begins move to community alcohol restrictions

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 03 March 2003

The Queensland Liquor Licensing Division says community justice groups are
currently being set up in all the state's deeds of grant In trust
Aboriginal communities as a prelude to the introduction of alcohol
restrictions.

The statewide roll-out follows the successful introduction of restrictions
in Aurukun on Cape York Peninsula.

It is in direct response to the Cape York Justice Study which found
alcohol-fuelled violence and abuse is central to many community problems.

Northern manager Debbie Dixon-Searle says it is hoped communities will
support the introduction of management plans to reverse negative trends.

"I know that there has been extensive consultation by the relevant
government departments with these communities, but our role is to assist
the communities in developing their alcohol management plans on the
technical aspects of the Liquor Act and the liquor licensing rules."
