Botany Bay upgrade to honour Indigenous significance

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 23 Jan 2003

The Aboriginal significance of the site where Captain Cook stepped ashore
in 1770 will be highlighted in a multi-million dollar upgrade to the
Botany Bay National Park in Sydney's south.

A draft plan of management for the historic site has been released today,
with the construction of a jetty, cafe and guided walk under proposal.

New South Wales Environment Minister Bob Debus says the upgrade is in
response to numerous complaints about the neglect of the site and its
state of disrepair.

Mr Debus says there will also be a "keeping place" for Aboriginal
artifacts and histories of the Dharawal people.

"It aims to reconcile the hopes and aspirations and interest of all of
those who presently visit the site, regardless of whether their interest
is in discovering the Aboriginal history of the area, celebrating the
achievements of Captain Cook or of course, simply wanting to have a family
outing," Mr Debus said.
