Govt's film plot promises Indigenous jobs

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 29 Dec 2002

The Northern Territory Government says an initiative to establish a film
office aims to capitalise on Indigenous culture and boost job
opportunities for Aboriginal people.

NT Minister for Business, Industry and Resource Development, Paul
Henderson, says the Territory's ancient Indigenous culture is a
significant drawcard for tourists.

Mr Henderson says film, television and new media industries will work in
partnership with the Government to boost business opportunities.

"It's a great opportunity for Aboriginal people to get involved in an
industry that directly supports and enhances their culture, and also to
get Aboriginal communities involved, not only in terms of the production
side, but also the tourism opportunities that are going to come from
this," he said.

"For every $1 million invested in the film, TV and new media industries of
capital investment, that means 20 jobs.

"It really is a highly labour-intensive industry and we're very keen to
develop the job potential of this industry, not only directly in TV and
new media and production but spin-off benefits for Northern Territory
tourism."
