Jewish centre to pay tribute to local Aboriginal communities

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on15 Dec 2002

Melbourne's Jewish Holocaust Centre will today pay tribute to the
Aboriginal community for its protest against Germany's treatment of Jewish
people 64 years ago.

In 1938 a delegation from the Australian Aborigines League was refused
admission to the German Consulate as it tried to deliver a strong protest
against the persecution of the Jewish people by the Nazi Government.

Two plaques will be unveiled at the Elsternwick Centre today, honouring
the Aboriginal people for their actions.

Shmeul Rosekranz, the president of the Jewish Holocaust Centre, says the
Aboriginal community's action deeply touched the Jewish people.

"I'm a survivor of the Night of the Broken Glass," he said.

"It is significant that we know that there were, somewhere, there were
people who took positive action and just didn't stand by."
