Terrorism pushes reconciliation off agenda: report

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 09 Dec 2002

Australia's second reconciliation report card in a year has given the
Federal Government the thumbs down.

The Reconciliation Australia report says recent terrorist attacks have
pushed reconciliation off the political agenda and there has been little
progress since it released six recommendations earlier this year.

The Government has only endorsed one of the recommendations, which calls
for a national benchmark for monitoring indigenous affairs.

Former Fraser government minister for Aboriginal affairs, Fred Chaney, has
helped compile the report card and says the results are not good for
Australia's image.

"We say there are really pressing problems which are in a sense a disgrace
to Australia because they're our area of lowest performance, our area of
worst performance," he said.

"It needs a concentrated, focused effort right across government, private
enterprise and community to deal with these issues in a whole way."
