NT immunisation rates beat US, UK: researcher

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 24 Nov 2002

A Darwin health researcher says immunisation rates among some Indigenous
communities in the Northern Territory are higher than those in North
America and the United Kingdom.

Ross Bailie from the Menzies School of Health Research says three years
ago best practice guidelines for preventative medical services in
Katherine and the Tiwi Islands were established as part of a pilot
project.

He says they involved outlining what type of health checks and
immunisation children and adults should have.

Professor Bailie says the guidelines significantly improved the
communities' immunisation rates - and is now a possible model for other
countries.

"For childhood and for adult immunisation for example the levels of
service to a degree are very high, in fact better than most developed
countries," he said.
