Mining giant plays down sit-in by protesters

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 18 Nov 2002

Mining giant, Pasminco, is playing a waiting game with 60 Aboriginal
protesters occupying its Century Zinc Mine in Queensland's Gulf of
Carpentaria.

The members of the Carpentaria Land Council group, claiming to represent
the traditional owners, is protesting against the first review of a
20-year land-lease agreement.

The group entered the site yesterday and tried to shut down a processor,
before taking over the workers' canteen this morning.

Pasminco's manager of external affairs, Kent Quigley, says while the
company is happy to negotiate, the protesters are not party to the
land-lease agreement.

"This meeting today is the Waanyi Nation Group, which is not part of the
agreement," he said.

"The Waanyi Nation group was formed after the agreement was signed and we
believe it was formed through the Land Council."
