WA MP 'incensed' over Aboriginal adoption comments

Extract from Australian Broadcasting Corporation - ABC Online, on 15 Nov 2002

The first Aboriginal woman elected to Western Australia's Parliament is
planning to lodge a formal complaint against a political opponent, whom
she has accusing of making racial attacks against her.

Labor MP Carol Martin says she is incensed over comments by Liberal MP Rob
Johnson made inside and outside Parliament, relating to the adoption of
Aboriginal children.

Mr Johnson disagrees with the provision in Government legislation that
states a preference for Aboriginal children to be placed with Aboriginal
carers.

He says it is a form of racism and is unfair on indigenous children who he
says are sometimes better off living outside their traditional
communities.

"You've got the parents who drink too much, and they get into trouble and
some of them go to jail, and so the kids are moved from pillar to post,"
he said.

Ms Martin says she is outraged by suggestions Aboriginal people cannot
look after their children.

She says she will make a formal complaint to the Speaker of the
Legislative Assembly.

"I don't care if you're a member of Parliament, I don't give a hoot who
you are, you have no right, he has no right to vilify indigenous people,"
she said.
